Putin and Xi Analyze Tensions Among G7 Leaders at Recent Summit

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart, President Xi Jinping, engaged in a phone conversation on Thursday to deliberate about the perceived discord among G7 leaders at the Group of Seven summit held this week.

The summit, which took place in Canada, witnessed the seven affluent nations struggling to maintain harmony, specifically over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This was further complicated by the early departure of U.S. President Donald Trump, who left to address the Israel-Iran conflict from Washington, D.C.

This unexpected exit left Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy without an opportunity to meet President Trump and advocate for additional U.S. military aid.

In their discussion, Putin and Xi reflected on the outcome of the G7 summit, focusing on the apparent tensions that arose among participants. A Kremlin aide, Yuri Ushakov, relayed to media that the two leaders also remarked on Zelenskiy’s trip, suggesting it was not his most fruitful visit abroad.

During the hour-long phone call, Putin and Xi also discussed the Israel-Iran crisis, their bilateral relations, and potential collaboration within the BRICS group, which is slated to hold a summit in Brazil in the following month. One of the topics included a new investment platform aimed at the Global South, proposed to be launched by the BRICS group.
